Autoplast project

From plastic to plastic,
with professionality and respecting the environment

The project

The project LIFE13 ENV/IT/000559 Autoplast aims at recovering plastic material coming from the automotive sector,. adopting an innovative production process which allows the quality of the finished product to be improved.

At the same time the implementation of a micro-collection system in the local area allows to recover plastic material that, otherwise, would have been sent to disposal.

This project complies with the philosophy of Company Social Responsibility and Sustainability, considering its strong environmental, social and economic value.

The Objectives

The project aims at developing a system for the recovery of special plastic waste from the automotive sector through the realization of a pilot recycling plant, as well as the development of a network for a selective collection, to be carried out in the Province of Brescia.

The specific objectives of the project are:

obiettivi-car

Recovery of plastic material

oviettivi-impianto-industriale

Construction and start-up of an industrial plant for transformation of the collected plastic waste in reusable material.

oviettivi-catena-approvvigionamento

Development and organization of a supply chain in the Province of Brescia.

obiettivi-separazione-componenti

Active involvement of a social cooperative in the activities of recovery, selection and separation of decommissioned components.

obiettivi-co2

Use of the regenerated granules in percentages higher than the current situation and with a reduction in the use of virgin raw materials and a reduction of CO2 emissions into the environment

Expected results

The project aims at demonstrating the effectiveness of an innovative treatment through a pilot application created by Valsir in cooperation with the Università degli Studi di Brescia.

In the meantime, thanks to a partnership with the social cooperative Cauto a micro-collection network in the local area will be developed, which will act as a supply chain for the plant.

obiettivi-oltre-200-tonnellate

Recycling of plastic materials

On the line, plastic from the recovery of material will be worked. In the initial stage, the reuse of approximately 200 tons of plastic materials coming from tanks, is expected.
In addition, the recovery and processing of plastic material coming from the automotive industry (such as bumpers) is also expected. the plant shall have a size such as to ensure a volume of processed materials of approximately 3,000 tons a year.

oviettivi-catena-approvvigionamento

Collection network

In addition to the traditional collection activity of plastic material at breaker’s yards and collection centers, the project aims at creating a widespread micro-collection network, to be held at car bodyworks, which allows to avoid the disposal of the material at landfills or Waste-to-Energy plants.

oviettivi-catena-approvvigionamento

Reduction of atmospheric emissions

Studies show that, on average, each kg of recycled plastics leads to the saving of 1.5 kg of CO2.
Considering that, when fully operational, the separation and recycling plant hereby described could process approximately 1,500 kg per hour of input material, it is clear that a project of this magnitude could have a significant impact on the environment. Considering, at full productivity, a 24 hour continuous cycle for 300 days a year, the potential reduction of CO2 atmospheric emissions is expected to be equal to 13,000 tons a year.

The industrial plant will make it possible to process a quantity of material of approximately 200 tons a year during the pilot project.

The line can be used also for the recovery of other components related to the automotive industry, such as bumpers, or items connected to other sectors, such as PP/PE crates, PP/PE mixed plastic materials, Big Bags, bottles, with the consequent active involvement of local bodies operating in the recovery and the selection of materials.

The Life Plus+

The LIFE+ program finances projects contributing to the development and the enforcement of the politics and the right in the environmental field. Particularly, this program facilitates the integration of the environmental issues in other politics et, more generally, contributes to a sustainable development.

LIFE began in 1992 and to date there have been four complete phases of the programme (LIFE I: 1992-1995, LIFE II: 1996-1999, LIFE III: 2000-2006 and LIFE+: 2007-2013). During this period, LIFE has co-financed some 4,171 projects, contributing approximately € 3.4 billion euros to the protection of the environment and climate.

The European Commission (DG Environment and DG Climate Action) manages the LIFE program.
The Commission has delegated the implementation of many components of the LIFE programme to the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME). External selection, monitoring and communication teams provide assistance to the Commission and EASME. The European Investment Bank will manage the two new financial instruments (NCFF and PF4EE).
